Ivan [Bud] Sherlock

Ivan [Bud] Sherlock was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on June 14, 1938. The oldest of four children, Ivan, who has always been known as Buddy, was a curious child who loved to read. He spent many summers visiting his Aunty Em and Uncle Arnold in Longlac with his family, swimming in Lake Superior and Boulevard Lake, and riding the street car to downtown Port Arthur to see the newest films at the Paramount and Lyseum theatres.

He joined the Navy League and Sea cadets at HMCS Griffin and when he was 17, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy. He trained in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia and started his career at Nadan, in Victoria, BC. He sailed on the Provider, the Protector, the Preserver and the Fraser as a Clearance Diver. In 1958 he married his childhood sweetheart Shirley Smith. They had three children together – Kelly, David, and Karen. Like most Military careers, home is never in one place so Bud moved his family from Victoria-Toronto-Victoria-Dartmouth, NS and finally to Thunder Bay. Bud also spent much of his career in the Canadian Arctic at Alert on Ellesmere Island.

When he retired from the Navy in 1979, he went to Confederation College and became a Stationary Engineer. He managed to get a job at HMCS Griffin and The Armories. He worked there for 18 years. He worked part time with the Naval Reserves and volunteered with the 55 Plus Centre where he became President for several years. He volunteered with Hospice Northwest in between his winter trips to Florida. In 2013 he fell in love with Miriam Franks until his death. Bud is survived by his three children, four grandchildren, Stephen, Christopher, Sarah and Rachel and two great grandchildren Ben and Leena. He will be dearly missed by many. He is predeceased by his parents, sister Loraine, and previous wives Shirley and Eleanor. There will be no funeral. In memory of Bud, a donation to the Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre would be greatly appreciated.
