Douglas Norman Smith

It is with great sadness that the family of Douglas Norman Smith announce that “Smitty” passed away on April 23, 2026 at the TBRHSC with his family by his side.

Born in Fort William on May 16, 1949 to Tally and Harry Smith. He grew up in Vickers Heights and later on built the home of his dreams along with his wife Sheila in O’Connor Township where they happily lived for many years.

Doug was an accomplished carpenter and cabinet maker and a very proud honorary 52+ year member of the Carpenters Local 1669. His artistic skills were very evident in the beautiful details of his home and shop which he built.

Sadly he was predeceased by his wife Sheila (nee Henry) in 2025 and ill health forced him to sell the home he loved and move to Glacier Ridge in Thunder Bay.

Doug is survived by his brother George and sister in law Delores of Fall River, NS and niece Kristin Smith of Milford, NS and her partner Keith of Truro, Nova Scotia and nephew Andrew and wife Jenny and family of North Delta, BC. He is also survived by sister Dorothy and brother in law Randy Germain, niece Stephanie and nephew Dan and wife Julie of Slate River, Ontario. Brother-in-law Doug and wife Mel Henry, nieces Carly, Kimberly, Kelsey (Nathan), brother in law David Henry and niece Jana and family as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins far and near.

Special thank you to the staff of the TBRHSC and Glacier Ridge for his excellent care and also to his good buddies Greg Auld of Nanaimo BC, Eric Williamson and John Simoniak of Thunder Bay for their regular calls and visits which meant so much to him.

As per Doug’s wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no service.

Condolences may be made through www.nwfainc.com
