June 29,1923 – April 27, 2026
Born as a resident of Blake Township and died as a resident of Blake Township almost 103 years later in the house that he built there in 1973. Born to Percy and Sylvia House June 29, 1923. Grew up during the depression and learned how to make do. Drove a tank with the South Alberta Regiment through France, Belgium, Holland and into Germany as part of the liberating forces of WWII. Met his wife Sheila Wegert when they were both working in a bush camp on Pie Island. He was the mechanic for Bob Irwin at Irwin Ready Mix for 38 years. Retired and went to work on his bush lots, cutting, skidding and hauling a few hundred cords of pulp and firewood a year while also planting almost 100,000 trees over the years. Helped each of his kids build their houses and also built a camp on Cloud Lake.
He was predeceased by his wife Sheila and his son Doug, his parents and all 8 of his siblings as well as his niece Iris Bellin. Steve is survived by daughter Marcia (James) Cameron and their sons Alex (Alina) and Stephen (Heather), and daughter Tanis (Pat) Heney and their sons Liam (Jenni) and Brent (Alex) and Doug’s sons Ryan (Kerri) and Clint (late Jessica) and Doug’s daughter Brehan (Dave), numerous great grandkids and niece Jeannie (Herman) Labelle as well as honorary granddaughter Tracey.
Our eternal gratitude to Tracey for helping us to keep Dad at home. Thanks to the Chaschuk family for keeping him in their fold and keeping his driveway clear once he was no longer able to do it himself. Thank you to Dr Tassone, Megan Ross NP and Nurse Connor and to all his PSW’s from the VON.
A drop in celebration of a long life, well lived will be held Thursday, April 30 from 6-9pm at the Best Western NorWester on Hwy 61.
