Youth Shelter Hopeful For Fall Opening

A local youth shelter is getting closer to completion.

Adam Schenk is the Executive Director of Urban Abbey’s Youth Shelter project, and says that today, they get the keys to the future home of the shelter on Simpson Street.

He indicates the next steps include hiring an architect to create the plans for the shelter, and securing building permits before they can start the renovations.

“I would still hope and anticipate that we will be open by the end of 2019, but unfortunately, renovation projects never seem to want to cooperate with our time frames.”

The shelter organizer adds they still need around $42,000 towards the $110,000 cost of renovating the building.

He notes they are “actively pursuing” grant funding, and welcome donations from the community.

They received $47,000 from the Community Foundation earlier this year.

Schenk tells us they’re excited to see the progress they’ve made towards the shelter so far.

The shelter is meant to house up to 16 young people between the ages of 16 and 24.
