Last night I ended up going down a rabbit hole of music videos on YouTube and came across a video from Prince I hadn’t seen in years. It was ‘U Got The Look’ featuring Sheena Easton, and listening to the song, I realized that Prince actually played this one really silly. It wasn’t his usual ‘serious and sexy’ or even his ‘silly and sexy’. This was just silly and I thought it was fantastic! He sings in a bit of a silly voice and there are some effects that really made me think of something else: Ruby Rhod from The Fifth Element. If you haven’t seen the movie, Ruby Rhod is a ‘presenter’ or ‘host’ of a popular radio(?) show and the character’s mannerisms and dress were definitely patterened after a futuristic Prince but I never realized that the voice might be patterened after the Purple One as well.
