Social Media Popular For News

A new survey suggests many of us turn to social media for our news.

The poll commissioned by the Canadian Journalism Foundation found just over half of Canadians say social media is their top source for news.

However, the survey also found only 32 per cent say they trust reports they see on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

For millennials, just under three-quarters said they get the day’s news from social media, but it’s still the least-trusted source at 36 per cent.

Just under half of American respondents get their news on social media, but over 40 per cent say they trust it.

On both sides of the border, a little more than half feel that false or misleading news will affect politics.

The survey got answers from just over 1,500 Canadians and a little more than 1,500 Americans.

It was conducted by Maru/Matchbox in late March.
