A monument marking the tainted history of the residential school system has been unveilled after six years of hard work.
Ann Magiskan is Thunder Bay’s Aboriginal Liason Officer and tells us the monument sits on top of a medicine wheel and will educate future generations as it is near the current site of the Pope John Paul the second school.
“It’s a very emotional day for our elders and this has been a long time coming.”
Dignitaries unveiled the Saint Joseph’s Indian Residential School Memorial today to honour all the children that attended the school from 1870-1966, including those who never made it home.
The monument was made possible through a partnership between the Thunder Bay Catholic School Board, the City of Thunder Bay and other organizations.
