Police Looking For Court Savings

City police are trying to find some savings in the work they do at the court house.

Chief Sylvie Hauth explains they found out after passing this year’s budget that they lost around $231,000 in grant funding for court security and transporting prisoners.

“We had seen an increase last year in our funding for court security, and we were being able to kind of do what we needed to do with the funding that was there. When we learned that there was a reduction this year, myself and the Board advocated with the Ministry to [ask] why we can’t stay status quo.”

The Police Chief says they’re looking at getting the Ministry of the Attorney General to provide courthouse security instead.

“What we’re doing is similar to other services in the province who do court security at a courthouse. For example, [one part is] the control room, where somebody is sitting answering phone calls, buzzing people through doors. That can be a position that’s done outside of the policing service.”
