Canadians have to be more careful than ever when they decided to have campfires, not just because of the fire itself but because of what might be in the wood.
Andrew Holland of the Nature Conservancy of Canada tells Acadia News the easiest way not to contribute to the Emerald Ash Borer problem.
“What we’re urging people to do is buy firewood close to your destination, and burn it all there. don’t bring unused wood back in your vehicle and back home, because you could be transporting this invasive beetle.”
The Emerald Ash Borer has been destroying trees in Eastern Canada since it crossed the Detroit-Windsor border in 2002.
Holland say the Canadian Forest Service has bred and raised parasitoid mite wasps in Ontario and is now releasing them in communities with infested trees.
