Rickford Promises Help For Schools

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford says the government will continue to help school boards transition through changing times.

All boards have been directed to find 4% in budget savings.

Rickford says boards are receiving extra funds to maintain teaching positions.

“We meet regularly to discuss the challenges and the opportunities, and frankly I haven’t heard anything from any one of them that would indicate teachers will lose their positions.”

While the Keewatin-Patricia District School Board was able to avoid cuts to teaching positions, the Rainy River District School Board has revealed 38 positions will be lost due to a loss in funding and enrollment declines.

Meanwhile, Thunder Bay’s Lakehead Public School Board tells us they haven’t finalized their budget yet.

An official with the Thunder Bay’s Catholic School Board says next year will bring about many challenge and changes in regards to staffing and funding.

The Catholic Board has approved a balanced budget with local priorities funding tied to collective agreements that expire at the end of August, it resulted in staff reductions.
