It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Nicolina “Nikki” Gusola (née Zabrieszach), who passed away peacefully with family at her side, on Thursday February 5th at the age of 91.
Nicolina was born November 30th, 1934 in Pulfero, Province of Udine, Italy, to Felicitia and Antonio Zabrieszach. Like many of her generation, she carried with her a strong work ethic, deep faith, and an enduring devotion to family. She emigrated to Canada in 1956, where she would go on to build a life grounded in love and resilience.
On June 2, 1956, Nicolina married Aldo Gusola (by proxy), with whom she shared 45 years of marriage before his passing in 2001. Together they raised their family and created a warm, welcoming home where family always came first. Spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren was Nicolina’s greatest joy.
She was a devoted mother to Susan (Gib), Dan (Roxanne), Fred (Marie), and Tino (Tara), and a loving grandmother to Taylor, Tiffany, Victoria and Brenan, all of whom she cherished deeply.
Nicolina was known for her humour, quiet strength, and unwavering dedication to those she loved. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, visiting with family, and playing cards. She shared strong bonds with her extended family and will be fondly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews in Italy and Thunder Bay.
Nicolina was predeceased by her husband Aldo Gusola; her parents Felicitia and Antonio Zabrieszach; her siblings Vilma, Fazio, Ferruccio, Enzo, Pia, and Palmira; and her granddaughter Lily Gusola.
Funeral services to celebrate Nicolina’s life will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2026 at 11 a.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street with Rev. Luigi Filippini presiding. Those wishing to view the services virtually may do so on the Sargent & Son Facebook page. The interment will take place at St. Andrew’s Cemetery. Visitation for friends will be held on Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society Northwest would be gratefully appreciated. On-line condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
