Majella “Gerry” Poirier

Majella Joseph Poirier, known to all as Gerry, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, at Hogarth Riverview Manor, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 91 years old.

Gerry was born on October 4, 1934, in Saint-Siméon-de-Bonaventure, Quebec, and spent the better part of his life in Northern Ontario, a place that suited him perfectly. He married Louisette Ferland in Port Arthur in 1957, a love story that began at the Snowman in Beardmore and never really stopped.

He built his career as an owner-operator in the woodlands industry and carried that same tireless work ethic into everything he did. In retirement, he wintered in Florida and Arizona, cycled the island at Lake Havasu, and returned each summer to Thunder Bay, where his riding lawnmower got more attention than most people give their careers. His truest joy was out on the water at Lake Shebandowan, boat in hand, float plane overhead, fishing remote lakes that he alone seemed to know existed.

Gerry had an enormous heart and even bigger generosity. He was the kind of man who showed up with a chainsaw before you finished asking. He loved golf, on good days and sometimes bad. He loved pies and pancakes with genuine sincerity. And he could make you laugh in two languages without breaking a sweat, usually punctuated by a perfectly timed Ciboire!

He is lovingly survived by his wife Louisette; his son Don (Susanne), granddaughter Chantal (Kyle), and great-granddaughters Kyla and Avery; his daughter Janice (Kevin) and grandson Adam; and his son Danny (Janeen) and grandson Eric.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northern Cancer Fund.

From Gerry’s family we would like to thank the staff at Hogarth for taking such good care of “Papa!” You are all amazing.

Merci Gerry. Pour tout.
