Allan Bruce Houstoun

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our father and beloved papa, Allan Bruce Houstoun on Friday, April 3, 2026. He passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospice, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Al was born on March 9, 1941, in Surrey, England. His love of travel, he often said, began early in life when his family crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the Queen Mary to come to Canada. Having lost his parents at a young age, he developed a deep resilience and compassion that would shape the rest of his life. He was fortunate to be taken in by family and raised by his Aunt Lois, Uncle William, and their five children, whom Allan considered his siblings. He shared many fond stories of his time growing up on their farm.

Allan’s love of reading and his caring nature led him to a career in teaching. Over 33 years, he touched the lives of many students, colleagues, and families. It was through his teaching career that Al met the love of his life, Gail Barbara Bell, a fellow teacher at Red Rock Public School. They married in 1966 and moved to Thunder Bay, where they built a warm and loving home, raised their four children, and created lasting memories through family camping and fishing trips.

Al dedicated much of his time to volunteering and supporting various causes, including his church community at Trinity United Church, Boy Scouts, March of Dimes, local schools, and Habitat for Humanity. Even in retirement, he continued to share his passion for teaching through his involvement in 55+ programs. Al had a strong sense of fun and adventure, often surprising both his children and grandchildren with his joy for life. Later in life, he found a wonderful friend and travel companion in Maureen Mannila, who shared his love of bridge, concerts, dining out, and traveling. He had been looking forward to their next big adventure once their health improved.

Al will be remembered as a witty, clever, creative, and fiercely loving man, known for pulling a simple piece of paper from his pocket and turning it into something special. His humour, kindness, and strength brightened the lives of all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife Gail, and his great-granddaughter Nova.

He is survived by his children, Bruce, Domonique (Darren), Heather (Preston), and Scott (Shay). He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren Ashley (Jeremy), Pierce, Rowan, Luna, Damion, Zack, Julian, and Toryn, and by his great-grandchildren Jedsun, Tucker, and Sadie. He is also lovingly remembered by Maureen Mannila and family, the Houstoun and Bell families, and numerous other relatives and close friends.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity United Church, 30 Algoma Street, Thunder Bay, ON.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital Foundation, St. Joseph’s Hospice, or a charity of your choice.
