Matawa Praises Missing Person Report PSA

A new video about how to report a missing person is getting kudos from the Matawa Learning Centre.

Principal Brad Battiston tells us it’s important to make sure the public understands how missing persons reports work, and the “Am I Missing?” campaign is also a big help for Indigenous students.

“From our perspective, it will help educate our students and our communities about how to go about the process, and also as to how to work with the police in locating missing students, or possibly missing students.”

The “Am I Missing?” video is in response to Recommendation 91 from the Inquest into seven Indigenous youths’ deaths, which calls for speeding up reporting of missing Indigenous students.

“It’s a safety issue for us,” Battiston points out.

The Matawa official adds it helps build trust between Indigenous students and the police.

Battiston points out he would also like to see funding in the future to train Learning Centre staff on missing persons reports.
