Living On The Edge: Homelessness And Poverty Pt 5

This week on Thunder Bay Votes: The issues that matter, living on the edge, homelessness and poverty.

What do you think the in-coming city council should do to address homelessness? We took our news mic into the community to ask.

Many had a similar solution in employment. Recognize the problem has grown in Thunder Bay, and then pay the homeless minimum wage, fixing things around the city, such as cutting grass on boulevards.

Others noted more resources should be spent on the Shelter House, increase subsidized housing, and, come to the understanding homelessness isn’t the fault of those suffering from it.

Some people were more philosophical, saying if the problem on the inside isn’t fixed, we won’t get anywhere. Homelessness expresses a society that is wounded and needs healing. One person noted every person is God’s child, help where you can help.

A few people touched on taxes, with one saying too much money is put into buildings and roads. If funding isn’t switched to homelessness, it will only get worse. Another person pointed to the rich, saying they should be taxed more, instead of relying on charity.

And finally, some people couldn’t give an answer, citing the complexity of the issue.

In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
