The Indigenous community in Northwestern Ontario is hoping no one forgets the legacy of the residential school system.
A walk from Van Norman Street to North Cumberland is taking place with over 80 students of an Indigenous employment and training service taking part.
The Nishnawbe Aski Nation is hosting their “Orange Shirt Day” walk on Sunday from 11 to 2.
Their route takes off from Patterson Park and ends at Pope John Paul the Second elementary, the former site of the St. Joseph’s Indian Residential School.
Officials says the walk honours the mothers, fathers, sisters and grandparents who didn’t return from those schools.
The walk gets it’s name from a story of a Canadian girl who had her new orange shirt stripped from her by a residential school official.
