Guns & Gangs A Focus At Municipal Meeting

Municipal leaders from across the district are meeting in Thunder Bay this weekend.

Their annual conference starts today and wraps up tomorrow, with several issues being discussed.

President Rick Dumas says they’ll hear about how municipalities under the Ontario Cemeteries Act are required to look after the grounds and headstones forever.

“So, by having those fees upfront with the plot sales and putting that away in a separate account is understanding that and having councillors and mayors understand their role.”

Today’s highlights include discussion around ways to reduce plastic in local landfills and an update on drugs, guns and gangs in the region.

Dumas tells us the gangs of today are in incognito and are just regular people flying into Thunder Bay with lots of drugs and getting people in the region hooked on them.

The two-day conference is taking place at the Prince Arthur Hotel, which has agreed to reduce the use of single-use plastic for the municipal league’s meeting.
