Festival of Colors getting provincial funding

The Festival of Colours in Thunder Bay is getting a piece of a $20 million investment into cultural events from the Ontario government.

Funding comes from the Experience Ontario initiative, and will be split between nearly 400 events. Grants for specific regions and festivals will be available in the coming weeks.

A celebration of spring and the passing of winter, the Festival of Colours is a summer waterfront event celebrating South Asian culture. Colourful powders made from corn starch and permissible cosmetic grade dyes are thrown in the air as attendees are encouraged to “cast away bad feelings and throw worries to the wind,” according to the festival’s website.

“From Ontario’s charming and historic small towns to its vibrant cities, festivals and events bring people together, create lasting memories and showcase the best of our communities,” said Stan Cho, Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming. “As we continue to work to protect Ontario and Canadian identity, investing in these homegrown experiences helps welcome more visitors and ensures communities across the province continue to thrive.”

South Asian cuisine will be served at the Festival of Colours along with cultural music, dance and yoga instruction.

The festival is scheduled for July 19 from 3 to 7 pm. Tickets are available here.
