City Suggests Delaying Turf Decision

A vote on the indoor turf facility could have to wait until next year.

City administration wants Councillors to put off their decision on the source of funding and bids to build the $33-million facility.

In a memo to Council for Monday night’s meeting, City Manager Norm Gale says there is no confirmation of external funding for it so far, and they don’t know what the city’s future budgets will look like because of the pandemic.

He’s recommending Council ask their staff for a report on the issue, to be received by November of next year.

Gale points out the city is in a tough financial situation and should wait at least until it knows how much government COVID-19 relief funding Thunder Bay will get.

He adds that if they delay their decision until November of next year, the project could start construction in Spring 2022 and open late the next year.
