Bring Back The Wave

A friend and I were recently having a conversation about driving habits in Thunder Bay. As a life long resident of Thunder Bay I found it interesting when my friend … a relative newcomer to the city … asked why don’t drivers here wave. Wave?

We know merging in this city is a thing. My friend commented whenever someone slows down to allow space so he can merge into traffic he gives them the “wave.” The “thanks” and I appreciate you sharing the road with me. But he said when he lets someone in he rarely gets a wave which he found odd. He went on to say that when he lived in Winnipeg when you let a bus pull back into traffic [which is the law] the driver would give you a quick flash of the 4 ways to say thanks. The bus driver version of the wave but he hasn’t seen any drivers here do that.

So his idea was let’s bring back or bring the wave to Thunder Bay. Someone lets you turn on to a busy street. The “wave”. Cut someone off in traffic give them the wave which says “sorry … my bad.” This simple gesture brings a little more respect and decency back to our relatively simple commute here in Thunder Bay.
