Local volunteers want more services to prevent more deaths on the streets.
Not One More Death is an activist group offering the city recommendations to improve access to shelter and other supports for people who are vulnerable.
The group aims to appear before City Council on Monday night.
They have published a list that includes building a longhouse that can serve as a shelter and a cultural space for Anishinaabe people in need.
They also want the city to set up free buses running 24/7 between services and shelters, and providing supplies to those in need.
The recommendation says the bus should include anti-racist social workers who can help people connect with services. They also want it to offer first aid, mental health supports, and necessities like warm clothes, food and water.
With all of its recommendations, the group emphasizes that the people in need of these services don’t feel safe around police and don’t want officers involved.
