Mikko Jalmar Lankinen

Mr. Mikko Jalmar Lankinen, known to many as Jay, age 87, passed away on April 17th, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Hospital Hospice care unit with family by his side, after a short battle with cancer.

Born on August 6, 1938, in Port Arthur, Jay lived a life marked by kindness, love, and a wonderful sense of humour that touched everyone who knew him. He valued family, friendship, and simple pleasures, and he carried himself with quiet strength and warmth throughout his life. Those who had the privilege of knowing him will remember his gentle nature, his easy laugh, and the way he made others feel welcome and cared for.

Jalmar spent his early life hunting and trapping with his father and brother, enjoying being in the outdoors. He also worked for Canada Car for a short time, drove trucks for various companies before he worked for the MTO, a career he took pride in for twenty years until his retirement in the early 2000s. Even after retirement, he enjoyed driving with Dayle all over Northwestern Ontario.

He liked playing solitaire, fishing, cooking and driving, all of which suited his calm and quiet nature. He would watch The Toronto Blue Jays at home every summer, as he loved baseball. Whether he was spending time outdoors, enjoying a quiet game, or simply taking a drive, Jay appreciated the small moments that made life meaningful.

Jay will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Marjorie Dayle, his daughter, Lisa and step-daughter Bonnie. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Cameron and his wife Stella, Jason and his wife Aina, as well as by his cousins and closest friends Bill Lankinen, his wife Marilyn, Gladys Babish, her daughter Marilyn, and many other cousins and friends. His family and friends will cherish the memories they shared with him and will hold close the many ways he showed his care, loyalty, humour and affection over the years.

Jalmar was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Hilda Lankinen, his bother Elmer, uncle Jack, aunt Hilja along with several cousins and friends.

A special thank you to Marilyn Babish, for all of her help, and to the doctors and nursing staff at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Care Group, especially the hospice unit, who tried to keep him healthy and comfortable.

Cremation has taken place.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 2nd at 1:30pm, at Pinegrove United Church, located at 100 Highway 130 Rosslyn Village.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice. Thank you. The Lankinen Family
