Douglas M. Savela

August 27, 1936 – April 22, 2026

On April 22, with heavy hearts, we said goodbye to our dad, Douglas Mervin Savela. He was a deeply loved father, grandfather, partner, Papa, brother, and friend whom will be greatly missed.

Doug was born on August 27, 1936, in Fort William (now Thunder Bay) to Wilbert and Irene (née Johnson) and spent his early years in Nolalu. He was the eldest of three sons. As a young man, he worked in local bush camps, where his strong work ethic and quiet determination became evident. He later spent over 30 years as a truck driver with Bulk Carriers, a career that brought him great fulfillment and suited him perfectly.

At a young age, Doug met and married the love of his life, Barbara. Together they built a life filled with love and raised five children during their 43 years of marriage. Doug found joy in simple pleasures — road trips with country music, travelling, camping, fishing, and most of all, time spent with family. He was also a lifelong and devoted member of the Free Methodist Church. Later in life, Doug shared 17 wonderful years with his partner Marilyn Wiggins. Our family sincerely thanks her for the love and care she gave him as well as her family for their support.

Doug was predeceased by his parents, Wilbert, and Irene; his wife Barbara; his second wife Madeleine; his brother Ron; and numerous brother and sisters-in-law.

He will be lovingly remembered by his partner, Marilyn; his children, Brad (Lynne), Karen (Bob), Dawna (Brad) Andy (Sharon), and Kristi (Rob); his grandchildren, Erika (Mike), Robert (Kristyn), Amanda (Ivan), Trevor (Kaitlyn), Geordie (Michaela), Carly (JJ), Travis (Lyric), Cassy (Clay), Emily (Owen), Mackenzie, Hannah (Kyle), Sydney (Cameron) and Noah (Daisy); great-grandchildren, Natalie, Leah, Kyle, Peyton, Ava, Jack, Johnny, Blaire, and Paisley; brother, David; and sister-in-law, Judy.

A private family Celebration of Life will be held this spring. The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the staff on the 4th floor and hospice at St. Joseph’s Care Group, and a special thank you to Dr. Feldstein.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma. Please sign the online condolences at everestofthunderbay.com

Rest in Peace. We love you Dad
