Verna Rose Abraham

February 1, 1951 – August 29, 2024

It is with deep love and remembrance that we announce the peaceful passing of Verna Rose Abraham at St. Joseph’s Hospital surrounded by loved ones.

A survivor of the 60’s Scoop, Mom faced life with quiet strength, wisdom, and a gentle humour that touched everyone who knew her.

After a courageous battle with health complications, Mom has joined the love of her life, her devoted partner of 15 years, Eddy who predeceased her on July 1, 2023.

Together, they shared a marriage filled with love, laughter, and a playful sense of humour that was cherished by all who knew them, our family’s running joke is that Dad forgot he told the jokes, and Mom forgot she heard them.

During her earlier years, Mom dedicated herself to supporting Indigenous families as a Social Worker, traveling to communities across Northern Ontario. She was known for her unmistakable presence—her giant car and stylish hats were signature marks of her personality.

Mom had a love for good jokes and, in her quiet wisdom, kept Dad’s adventurous spirit grounded.

She preferred the simple joys in life: a quiet day on the deck with Dad, a beer in one hand, a cigarette in the other, some good music playing and the company of their beloved dogs, Keeper and Layla.

Though small in stature, her presence was formidable—Dad would often say, “I’m scared of Mom,” and she would laugh, reminding everyone of her strong, loving spirit.

Verna is survived by her loving daughters Liz (Rob), Heidi, and Tiffany, her adopted son Thompson as well as her grandchildren Caspian, Ashton, Kory, Lacey, Charles, Ezekiel, Justice, Jessilyn, Rose, Billy, and Elijah, and her cherished great-grandchildren.

We extend heartfelt gratitude to the phenomenal PSWs from Dilico, whose love, care, and support allowed Mom to remain at home surrounded by her beloved dogs until her declining health required her to be moved to St. Joe’s Hospice where that same care and compassion was given by the dedicated and skilled doctors and nurses.

Verna has been cremated, and her ashes were scattered near her home community in Manitoba, returning her spirit to the land she loved. She will be remembered for her love, her laughter, and the quiet strength she carried throughout her life.
