Update, Saturday afternoon:
Bay Street has been reopened after a fire destroyed a building housing a business and what is believed to be residential units upstairs. Machar Avenue north of Bay is still closed.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue officials say the fire gutted the building, and the front of it is collapsed.
Crews arrived there around 5 o’clock Friday afternoon, and fought the blaze into Saturday morning.
There has been no confirmation of what caused the blaze at the Maki Block.
Witnesses in the Arthur Street area tell us they could smell the smoke Friday night, and there’s still a lingering odor at the waterfront.
There is no official word yet of any injuries.
