Councillor Explains Vote Switch On Turf

“Only one thing… money… I know money talks.”

That’s Peng You confessing why he switched his vote to delay the multi-use indoor turf facility in the most recent vote.

The At-large city councillor adds the extra time could have secured more investors, such as government and soccer groups, proving Thunder Bay’s commitment to this project. “You show the commitment to the world, not just Thunder Bay, that you have so many leverages… government funding, business sponsorships, personal donations… people will support you.”

The city councillor also acknowledges regardless of the project, people will complain no matter what. Red River Ward Councillor Brian McKinnon also switched his vote that night to delay a bit longer.

In addressing community concerns about the cost, You adds he switched as he is not confident the overall price will not go up further.

“We have to look at how much revenue we can generate. Just based on the residential tax base…. that is crazy. In the long run, we are going into a bigger hole,” says You.

The city councillor supports the project, adding businesses and contractors want to be involved.

In answering concerns the facility won’t be for everyone, largely due to cost of using it, he points out funding will come from user fees, but also community support for those cannot afford it, making it for everyone. “You have to let any group of people, like those with circumstances that are difficult, you give them tools, and they can do the fundraising, and get the support, and join the program.”

The city councillor adds he has spoken to Fort William First Nation which expressed interest.
