Samuel Risley Wraps Up Work In Thunder Bay

The Canadian Coast Guard’s Samuel Risley has recently wrapped up some work in the Thunder Bay Harbour.

Captain Travis Borchuk says every winter the ice wears down stickers and identification markers on buoys, and its there job to check on them in the spring.

“Check every single buoy, to ensure it is in the appropriate position and that it is displaying the appropriate marks. If the buoy is worn out, damaged or missing their identification letters or reflective material we replace that and in some cases the buoy itself,” Borchuk said.

The Captain says because of COVID-19 shore leave was cancelled for their crew and when they did have to enter the town for supplies they wore masks and kept their distance.

The 23 member crew works four-week shifts on the Samuel Risley and undergoes pre-screening and temperature checks as part of their health and safety protocols.
