City Workers Plead ‘Bag Your Garbage’

The next time you put your garbage out for collection the city’s waste and recycling workers want you to bag it.

Union official Dana Vacek indicates there are many people who simply put loose garbage in a trash can and that puts workers at risk of getting sick from contaminated rubbish.

“Bagging your garbage can make it that much easier for them to do their job and make sure everyone stays healthy during this time (of COVID-19),” notes Vacek.

The CUPE 87 official explains anyone in that department who gets sick makes it tough on the few workers they have already.

Vacek states “We don’t have the bodies if somebody gets sick to replace them. They’re working with just enough staff as it is so there’s a risk there that if something happens they wouldn’t be able to provide the service needed to the community.”
