Under-Spending Angers Autism Group

A northwestern advocacy group is “extremely disappointed and infuriated” by the latest development in the province’s Autism Program.

A report from the Financial Accountability Office of Ontario says the government spent just under half of its $600-million Ontario Autism Program budget in the first three-quarters of the fiscal year.

The group Northern Autism Families says they aren’t surprised.

With three months left in the fiscal year, the group says the province is trying to spend the rest of the funding by offering “one-size-fits-all” courses and workshops for families.

They claim those aren’t enough, calling the move irresponsible and harmful to children. The group also blames the under-spending for a lack of services in the north, requiring families to pay to travel to other cities for care.
