By now a good deal of Indigenous students from Dennis Franklin Cromarty school in are back in their northern homes celebrating Christmas with family and friends.
William Bottle of Mishkeegogamang First Nation is one of them, but he is not necessarily homesick admitting it’s “half and half” since he enjoys DFC and “everything in Thunder Bay. However, he was looking forward to having some “good family time.”
The DFC student says his holiday will be spent going to the arena every night and studying for the next semester.
Also in Mishkeegogamang is grade 11 student Michael Bottle who was looking forward to a family visit as well “after staying (in Thunder Bay) for a long time.”
Someone who was really looking forward to going back home for Christmas was grade 11 student Jayva Jeremiah. She says living in the city during the school year keeps her longing for her northern community of Round Lake noting she “doesn’t get to spend much time with her family” because she is here in Thunder Bay. Jeremiah also suggests many of her friends are not fans of city living and look forward to their visits home.
One grade 12 student who decided to stay in the city for the holidays is Kyle Mamakwa of Kingfisher Lake. He tells us most of his family lives in Thunder Bay and he “wants to be spending time with them.”
