You have until January 5th to get outdoors and count some birds for Ontario Nature.
Canada’s Christmas Bird Count is now into its 120th year, Ontario Nature’s Anne Bell says last year, more than 14,000 Canadians recorded over 2 million individual birds from 250 species across the country. In Ontario, more than 4,500 citizen scientists joined 120 counts throughout the province. Rare sightings in 2018 in Thunder Bay included Townsend’s solitaire and a long-eared owl.
The City’s annual Bird Count is taking place today and is going into its 80th year. Thunder Bay has been a part of this annual tradition since 1939, with the count being held every year except for 1944. In the region, bird counts were held earlier this month in Dryden, Fort Frances and Atikokan.
