Sobeys is going to be the first national grocer to eliminate plastic bags by the end of January 2020.
The company says this change will take 225 million plastic grocery bags out of circulation, per year at its 255 Sobeys owned locations across the country and that includes all the Safeway stores it owns.
The company says in August in the produce aisle it will be introducing a line of reusable mesh bags made from recycled water bottles to provide customers with an alternative to carry their fresh produce.
The company says it is doing this to help the environment with sustainable alternatives that drive long-term behavioural change.
Today we announced that we're eliminating plastic bags from all Sobeys grocery stores by the end of January 2020. This is just the first step in our journey towards a more #sustainable future. https://t.co/1XhaQ7lh6a pic.twitter.com/6MJuizgWI7
