Phase 2 of a historic $1.6-billion federal investment in a northern power project has been approved.
The Ontario Power Grid has given the all-clear for the construction of the massive Wataynikaneyap Power transmission line from Red Lake to Pikangikum.
Phase one involves upgrading the electrical system with a new line to Pickle Lake.
The newly approved phase involves the installation of 1,630 kilometres of the transmission line which will connect 17 remote First Nations communities north of Red Lake and Pickle Lake.
Community connections are scheduled to start in 2021, and all communities connected by the end of 2023.
