A provincial program for most of Ontario that required emission testing on older passenger vehicles is officially over.
Environment Minister Rod Phillips says the Drive Clean program was effective when it was first introduced two decades ago.
“But as the years expired, so did its usefulness, and Drive Clean no longer did the job it was intended to do.”
The government plans to implement a new emission testing program for heavy-duty vehicles such as transports later this fall.
Drive Clean wasn’t required in northwestern Ontario.
The Ministry notes because of improved industry standards, just five per cent of vehicles tested in 2017 failed emission testing.
Phillips claims ending the Drive Clean program will save people time and taxpayers more than $40-million per year.
