Big Jump In Use Of Force Police Stats

The amount of times police had to use force to deal with situations last year jumped substantially from 2016

They saw an almost 80 percent increase which coincides with more calls for service as well. 110 use of force reports were submitted in 2017 compared to just 62 in 2016.

The top type of force that was used for both years was trying to talk a person down known as tactical communications, followed by drawing their handgun.

Officials say weapon related calls for service accounted for the largest portion of use of force incidents, followed by other which included murder scenes, address checks and kidnapping cases.

Officers discharged their firearms 19 times as opposed to 3 in 2016, but they were all in relation to a wounded animal or aggressive animals endangering the public. (File photo)
