Regional leaders are asking the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation how they should plan for the future.
Terrace Bay Mayor Jody Davis says area communities are having trouble planning for the long term, when they don’t know what their assessment base will be in the future.
Davis says since 2000 his local mill has forked over less and less in taxes after three reassessments, adding he doesn’t expect MPAC to buck the trend anytime soon.
Davis notes the mill has essentially been operating the same way, yet its property value keeps declining. He adds one of the biggest problems with MPAC is that nobody seems to understand why the assessment formula seems to be changing.
Meanwhile, MPAC representative James Harris says questions about how industrial and commercial properties are assessed haven’t fallen on deaf ears. He says he plans to regroup with senior management to discuss concerns heard from surly politicians at a municipal meeting last week.
