New COVID Restrictions For Thunder Bay District

As expected the Thunder Bay District has been moved to the yellow level on the province’s COVID-19 colour-coded system.

Starting Monday it will mean events and social gatherings will be limited to 10 people indoors and 25 people outdoors.

Organized public events and gatherings will be limited to 50 people indoors and 100 people outdoors.

Liquor can only be sold or served between 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. which will affect bars and restaurants that serve alcohol.

There must also be contact information from all seated patrons with a limit of six people seated together.

For sports and recreational fitness, 50 people are allowed indoors for classes, as well as for fitness facilities, and there can be 100 people outdoors for classes.

As for the City of Thunder Bay the new restrictions affect the following:

All Recreational Facilities

The following protocols will be implemented in the Yellow – Protect level at recreational facilities:

  • Increasing space between patrons to three metres for areas where there are weights/weight machines and exercise/fitness classes
  • Reservations will be required to book time for an activity, even those previously deemed as ‘drop-in’ programs; one reservation is required for teams

In addition to the general measures outlined above for recreational facilities, some facilities have additional measures. These include:

Community Centres

  • Recreational programs/classes will be limited to 10 people per room indoors and 25 people outdoors
  • Contact information for all patrons and attendance for team sports is required
  • Operating hours will be limited and must close at midnight
  • Liquor will only be sold or served between 9 am-11 pm, and no consumption of liquor is permitted between 12 am-9 am
  • Contact information for all seated patrons will be required
  • Limit of six people may be seated together (eg. At weddings and sit down events)
  • Limit volume of music (eg. No louder than volume of normal conversation to prevent shouting)

Canada Games Complex

  • Anyone entering the facility requires pre-booking – previously, this was only required for swimming, fitness classes and squash, but is now required for using any fitness area as well (eg. Workouts). This can be done upon arrival at the front desk.
  • Squash players will be encouraged to wear eye wear and masks while playing with members outside of their household.

Masks will still be required throughout all facilities, except while actively engaging in physical activity. All other protocols from the “Green – Prevent” level will still be in effect aside from the changes listed above.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
