Financial Relief Options Up For Vote

Some financial help could be coming to Thunder Bay residents who have lost income because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

City staff are putting forward a list of recommendations that will be discussed at Monday night’s City Council meeting.

They include delaying the May 6 property tax deadline to July 8, and extending the deadline for the tax and water credit program to September 1, 2020.

Council will consider waiving the water penalty for water bills due by April 14, May 15, and June 15 this year, and doing the same for the fee for non-sufficient funds on tax and water bills.

Other steps include setting up an emergency fund of $235,000 for Community, Youth & Cultural Funding
Program recipients.

It also recommends stopping “all collection work outside of legislative requirements” until the end of September, and waiving fees for re-issuing of marriage licenses and commissioning services for three months.
