Justice & Safety Main Themes Of NAN Conference

A Nishnawbe Aski Nation justice and safety conference has been a year in the making.

Chiefs called for it over a year ago and now a two-day symposium is taking place this week at the Victoria Inn.

Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler addressed delegates this morning saying these two issues are crucial to NAN communities.

“Every child in our community deserves to live in a safe home and in a safe community. We need to make sure that we equip our communities to defend themselves from every danger,” Fiddler says.

The keynote speaker at the conference is Senator Kim Pate who is known for her research on the criminal justice system.

Fiddler told the audience Tuesday morning that they need to learn more about how they can better enforce their own by-laws.

He went on to say they hope to learn from Bearskin Lake First Nation.

“Even though they created their own by-laws and the ability to enforce them is a challenge. I hope that we can talk more about that and see how we can better address that going forward,” Fiddler added.
