Thunder Bay’s mayor feels Councillor Trevor Giertuga may be using the Integrity Commissioner as a weapon against those not voting in favour of the Designated Truck Route by-law.
Bill Mauro told Acadia Broadcasting’s John Ongaro his council colleague did not accuse McKellar Councillor Brian Hamilton of Conflict of Interest when he voted in favour of the truck route.
“Only when Councillor Hamilton voted against the designated truck route, he didn’t do anything about Councillor Hamilton when he voted in favour of the designated truck route. So, now he is trying to find a way to put me in a similar position,” says the Mayor.
Bill Mauro adds he’ll leave it up to the Councillor to decide if he’ll answer for himself.
“You’ve got a councillor for 15 years or so who’s been trying to do this, accomplish a particular end. It looks like he’s trying to do it through the Integrity Office, and not able to get it done at the council table. The issue on the designated truck route is not something I’ve agreed with,” adds the Mayor.
Councillor Giertuga says he’ll go to the Integrity Commissioner over what he calls a breach of ethics by the Mayor at last night’s meeting. Bill Mauro further states Giertuga’s complaint against Councillor Hamilton was for Conflict of Interest, whereas last night’s matter was for an accusation of breaching the Code of Conduct.
