Neskantaga Declares Emergency, Evacuation Denied

The remote community of Neskantaga First Nation is declaring an elevated state of emergency after their water pump and backup pumps broke down.

The community also known as Landsowne House says it’s also prompted by the federal government’s denial of an emergency evacuation request.

In a statement, Chief Chris Moonias says the broken water pumps mean unfiltered and contaminated water is running through the residents’ taps, while others have no water service.

They wanted to transport 188 people who they say are most vulnerable to the contaminated water, including 72 children.

Chief Moonias says the community is “appalled” by the decision, and “extremely concerned.”

The community has been under a boil water advisory for around 24 years.
