The weather helped crews battling two forest fires near two Northwestern communities yesterday.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says the blaze near Pikangikum First Nation is not under control yet, but they made some progress thanks to the rain.
Meanwhile, near Pickle Lake, cloudy weather put a damper on the fire. Crews were able to set up fire breaks and hose lines in critical areas nearest the community. It’s not under control yet at 781 hectares.
Environment Canada is warning of poor air quality near both communities because of the fires.
The fire hazard remains extreme in parts of the region, including the Thunder Bay, Nipigon, Dryden, Sioux Lookout, and Fort Frances districts.
