Council To Hear “Wake The Giant” Request

City Council is being asked to help the Wake the Giant Program, that identifies safe spaces for Indigenous people.

Sean Spenrath is the Student Success Coordinator at Dennis Franklin Cromarty school, and says they want $10,000 worth of services for a music festival for incoming students this fall.

“Stage lighting, sound equipment, security fencing–all the stuff that they have that they usually charge [for], we’re asking them to donate that for the next three years to give this festival the chance to become something the size of Blues Fest.”

They are asking for that to be continued for three years, for a total of $30,000 in donated services.

The DFC staff member says the music festival will be part of a student orientation this September, which in turn is part of phase two of the Wake the Giant project.

Spenrath calls it “The big last send-off to these kids to say ‘hey, welcome to the community, we’re all here to support you.'”

They hoped to have 150 local businesses and groups on board in time for the orientation, but notes over 200 have already joined the Wake the Giant program.

He’s optimistic, given that reception from businesses, and positive comments from the Mayor, that Council will fulfill the request tonight.
