The Northern Policy Institute says the region’s labour market is on stable grounds.
The think tank released a related report recently, and found the supply of available workers in relation to available work is promising. But the report also says there’s still an out-migration trend among young people.
Research coordinator James Cuddy says, while youth employment rates are higher than provincial and national averages, a lot of 20-somethings are still moving out of the region and that’s challenging findings.
He says this means getting creative about how we grow our labour market and human capital, by keeping young people here and keeping them employed.
Cuddy adds more should be done in terms of partnerships with industry and post-secondary institutions to encourage young people to stay.
