The province has shut down two youth detention facilities in Thunder Bay.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Children and Social Services tells our newsroom The Jack McGuire Centre on Otway Street and J.J. Kelso Youth Centre on Oliver Road have been “significantly underused.”
They say the youth who resided at these facilities and are from northern communities have been “transferred to remaining facilities in the Northern Region.”
Both facilities are operated by William W. Creighton Youth Services.
The McGuire Centre housed youth between the ages of 12 and 17 while the J.J. Kelso Centre was for girls between the ages of 12-18.
Officials add, “The decision to close these facilities is a difficult one, however these changes are in line with recommendations made by the Auditor General.
