Thunder Bay is welcoming 38 new Canadian citizens.
Sanket Upadhyay moved from India to Canada around seven years ago, and officially got his Canadian citizenship at a ceremony on Friday.
While it’s an important step, he admits it’s not a major change for him after living, working, and attending school in Canada.
“I’m excited to vote and travel, otherwise it’s good to be Canadian,” Upadhyay says.
The ceremony was held at Hammarskjold High School.
The location was ideal for grade 11 student Maria Saburov and her family.
It’s been five years since Saburov and her family came to Calgary, Alberta from Israel.
“When we moved to Thunder Bay, and my English was already better, then I feel like that’s when I felt like I was part of this community.”
Saburov says it’s exciting to officially be a Canadian citizen.
The Khanlarian family finished a 15-year-long journey when they took the oath of citizenship.
Kief Khanlarian explains he made the decision to immigrate around 15 years ago, while on a military exercise with the British military in Alberta.
“I just thought, what a great place to take the family and raise them,”
