Truck Route By-Law Rejected

It seems the Designated Truck Route by-law is in limbo after it was voted down last night.

The truck route by-law would limit heavy transport trucks to the Trans Canada, and control how they can move through the city.

City Engineering Director Kayla Dixon explains they won’t come forward with a new by-law until Council requests one.

“At this point, there was no specific direction from Council tonight to let us know if there was a specific amendment that they wanted to see, or a clause that they had concerns with that we needed to review.”

Councilor Trevor Giertuga argues the vote rejecting the by-law is an attempt to get around Council’s previous decision to pursue the route.

He points out Councillors have “[talked] about wanting to get all the information, wanting all the questions answered, and it’s all just rhetoric, in my opinion.”

“People want, obviously, as they discussed previously in the back room, just shoot down this by-law.”

Giertuga feels that “goes against what Council duly passed” at previous meetings, and points out Council has other methods to reverse their decisions.

Deputy City Clerk Krista Power explains the options available for the proposed route and the by-law to regulate it.

“First is a notice of motion to rescind or amend the previous decision to implement the truck route,” she explains, “[The] second one is a notice of motion to reconsider the defeat of the by-law, and then the third option is that Administration comes forward with either an amended by-law, further suggestions, or requesting further direction.”
