Tiny Home Pilot Project Comes To Council

The Lakehead Social Planning Council hopes the city of Thunder Bay will support a project to build tiny homes.

Social Researcher Bonnie Krysowaty will speak to Councillors at tonight’s meeting. The Lakehead Social Planning Council or LSPC has previously proposed tiny homes as a possible solution to homelessness.

While tiny homes can range in size, Krysowaty says the homes they are considering can be between 300 and 700 square feet at a cost of around $75,000. She says they’ve been working toward a pilot project to build tiny homes in the city, and want City Council’s help.

“This time we’re expecting a report back. We’d like to hear that the city is definitely going to be a partner in maybe some endeavours that will go ahead, and support any funding applications that might happen in the future toward a tiny homes initiative,” she explains.

Although the LSPC has said small homes could help people with a low income or who are homeless, the Social Researcher says the homes could be for anyone from “any demographic.” She notes it’s possible to set up a community of small homes, especially for seniors or elders in First Nation communities.

A report to Council says the LSPC and Habitat for Humanity are preparing an application for funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, which is due February 26. It notes they expect to be able to send their application in by then.
