A big part of Super Bowl is the commercials. There have been a lot of awesome spots over the years and some clunkers. Today we’re concentrating on the classics. Big thanks to Yardbarker, which has an article which I piggy-backed a lot of this on. Check out their rundown here.
1979 – “Hey Kid, Catch” – Pittsburgh Steelers Defensive Lineman Mean Joe Greene has a moment with a young fan. I think the most impressive part of this one is how Mean Joe manages to pound a full coke. I can’t even put back a couple glugs without succumbing to the fizziness.
1984 – Wendy’s “Where’s the Beef” – I remember being a little kid and “Where’s the beef?” being a regular saying among my friends. When five-year-olds are saying your slogan, that’s a successful campaign.
1984 – Apple “1984” – This George Orwell-style ad, to announce the new Macintosh computer’s arrival, apparently only aired once! At first, I thought the gal was a pole vaulter.
1989 – Budweiser “Bud Bowl” – A bunch of beer battling it out on the gridiron. This went on for years. On a related note, I know plenty of people who have taken on beer and lost during the Super Bowl.
1992 – Pepsi “The Best Pepsi Ad Ever” – This is probably my all-time favourite. Makes sense. I was 13 and she was Cindy Crawford.
1993 – McDonald’s “The Showdown” – This is such a classic! The competition between Larry Bird and Michael Jordan for a Big Mac just keeps escalating. It went on to inspire a similar battle between Gretz and Sundin. If they ended up tied, I would award this one to MJ cause that outfit is worth bonus points!
1995 – Budweiser “Bud. Weis. Er.” – Simple yet memorable.
1999 – Budweiser “Wassup?” – Everybody said this after this commercial aired.
2008 – E-Trade “Talking Baby” – This was the height of technology 12 years ago. Now we can all do this on our phones.

2010 – Snickers “Betty White” – You had me at Betty White. You kept me at Abe Vigoda.
2011 – Volkeswagen “The Force” – A little kid tries to use the force on everything around him. Reminds me of my little guy whenever we go by an automatic door.
2014- Budweiser “Puppy Love” – It’s all about the Buds! Can’t miss when you pair a puppy with the famous Cyldesdales!

2018 – Tide “It’s a Tide Ad” – Tide cleans up the competition with this one. Brilliant spot that really leaves its mark.
1999 – WWF “Attitude” – As a big wrestling fan, I can’t let this list go by without mentioning the World Wrestling Federation’s (now Entertainment’s) foray into the main stream! And that’s the bottom line, if you smell what I’m cookin’!
