Tent encampment fire leaves 1 dead, 2 injured

One person died in a tent fire at a Thunder Bay encampment this week, according to fire investigators.

Firefighters were called to the Kam River Park encampment area off Simpson Street at around 4 a.m. Wednesday.

“Upon arrival, the first fire crew encountered flames engulfing a tent,” Thunder Bay Fire Rescue said in a news release at the time.

Fire officials said two people were taken to the hospital for “medical evaluation” following the fire.

A spokesperson with the Office of the Fire Marshal confirmed to our newsroom on Saturday that there was also a fatality, in addition to the two people who were injured.

Sean Driscoll said investigators have completed the on-scene portion of the investigation but no cause has been determined at this time.
